About Cancún
Cancún's Hotel Zone is a 14-mile strip of resorts on a sandbar between the Caribbean and the lagoon; downtown (El Centro) has the local markets and cheaper hotels. South along the Riviera Maya are Playa del Carmen, Tulum's cliff-top ruins, the cenote swimming holes and the ferry to Cozumel. Chichén Itzá is a 2.5-hour day trip west.
Getting in: Cancún International is 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone. Prebooked private transfers cost $35–$60 per vehicle each way; the ADO bus runs to downtown and Playa del Carmen ($6–$12) from Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Ignore the timeshare sales desks between customs and the exit. Uber operates but pickups at the airport are contested; official taxis are pricey ($50+).
US citizens need a valid passport (and complete the digital FMM entry form if asked). Pesos get better prices than dollars for taxis and small purchases; ATMs in banks give fair rates. Tip 10–15% at restaurants and $2–$5 for resort staff. Stay in the Hotel Zone for beaches and nightlife, Playa del Carmen for a walkable town, or Tulum for boutique hotels.

Travel tips for Cancún
- Book airport transfers before you fly and walk past the sales desks in the arrivals hall — they're timeshare pitches.
- Seaweed (sargassum) can pile up on east-facing beaches from May to September; north-facing beaches and Isla Mujeres are less affected.
- Carry pesos for taxis, tips and markets; card fees and 'dollar prices' add up.
- All-inclusive resorts can be cheaper than hotel-plus-meals during shoulder season — compare total trip cost.
- Hurricane season is June–November; travel protection is sensible for late-summer trips.
