About Victoria

The Inner Harbour is the centre of everything — the Parliament Buildings outlined in lights, the Empress hotel, float planes landing in front of both. Behind it, downtown is compact and low-rise, with Chinatown's Fan Tan Alley and a row of bookshops and cafés along Fort Street. The city ends quickly: within twenty minutes you are at Beacon Hill Park looking across the strait at the Olympic Mountains in Washington.

Getting in: Victoria International is about 15 miles north of downtown, roughly 30 minutes. A shuttle bus runs to the main hotels for around C$25; taxis cost C$60 or so. Many visitors arrive instead by ferry from Vancouver or Seattle, or on a float plane that lands directly in the Inner Harbour — the most scenic 35 minutes in Canadian aviation.

Victoria rewards slowness. The Butchart Gardens, 30 minutes north, are genuinely worth the trip even for people who do not care about gardens. Whale watching runs from April to October, with resident and transient orcas plus humpbacks. And the rest of Vancouver Island — Tofino's surf beaches, the old-growth forest at Cathedral Grove — starts where the suburbs end.

June to September for the driest, warmest weather and peak whale watching. Spring comes early — the city counts its flower blossoms in February while the rest of Canada is frozen. Winter is mild and wet rather than cold, and rates drop sharply.

Float planes land in the Inner Harbour from downtown Vancouver in about 35 minutes — expensive, and the best arrival in the country.
The ferry from Vancouver takes 90 minutes plus terminal time at both ends; allow half a day door to door.
Book whale watching for the start of your trip, so a weather cancellation leaves room to rebook.
Victoria is mild, not warm. Summer highs sit around 70°F and evenings by the water are cool — bring a layer.
Tofino is a four-hour drive, not a day trip. Give it two nights or skip it.

Should I fly to Victoria or to Vancouver?

Fares to Vancouver are usually lower and the schedule is much wider. From there it is a 25-minute flight, a 35-minute float plane into the Inner Harbour, or a 90-minute ferry. If Victoria is your main destination, ask us to price both — the connection is sometimes cheaper than the direct.

When can you see whales near Victoria?

April through October, with the strongest months in June to September. You may see resident and transient orcas, humpbacks and minke whales. No operator can guarantee a sighting, though most offer a second trip free if you see nothing.
