About Calgary
Calgary sits on the prairie with the Rockies filling the western horizon. Downtown is compact and walkable, with the Bow River running along its northern edge and the Peace Bridge crossing to Prince's Island Park. Inglewood and Kensington are the two neighbourhoods worth walking — independent shops, breweries and restaurants, both a short hop from the centre.
Getting in: Calgary International is about 11 miles northeast of downtown. A taxi runs C$40–$50; the Route 300 BRT bus costs around C$11.25 and takes 45 minutes. For the mountains, scheduled shuttles run from the airport directly to Banff and Lake Louise for roughly C$70–$80 each way, which is usually easier than driving if you are not planning to explore beyond the townsites.
The real decision is whether to stay in the city or head straight west. Banff National Park is the headline — Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway — and a park pass is required for every vehicle. Book mountain accommodation months ahead for July and August, and note that Moraine Lake is closed to private vehicles, reachable only by shuttle, bus or bike.
Best time to visit
June to September for hiking and the warmest mountain weather, with the Stampede in the first half of July. December to March for skiing at Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise and Norquay. May and October are the value months — fewer people, and the scenery does not care.

Travel tips for Calgary
- Decide early whether you are a city visitor or a mountain visitor; the shuttle to Banff leaves straight from the airport terminal.
- A Parks Canada pass is required for every vehicle in Banff and Jasper. Buy it online before you go and skip the gate queue.
- Mountain weather ignores the calendar — snow is possible in June and September. Pack layers and a waterproof shell whatever the forecast says.
- Book Stampede-week and July–August mountain accommodation months out. Late booking here means a room in Canmore, not Banff.
- Calgary sits at 3,400 feet and the air is dry. Drink more water than you think you need on the first day.

How far is Banff from Calgary airport?
About 90 minutes by road. Scheduled shuttles run from the airport terminal directly to Banff and Lake Louise for roughly C$70–$80 each way, and rental cars are available at the airport.
Do I need a car to visit Banff?
Not necessarily. Shuttles connect the airport, Banff and Lake Louise, and Roam buses run within the park. A car helps for the Icefields Parkway, but parking at the busiest lakes is limited and Moraine Lake is closed to private vehicles entirely.
When is the Calgary Stampede?
Ten days in early-to-mid July. Book flights and hotels well in advance — rates rise steeply and availability disappears across the whole city.
