About Quebec City

The city divides into Upper Town, on the cliff behind the walls, and Lower Town at the water's edge, linked by a funicular and a steep set of stairs. The Château Frontenac dominates the skyline from the Dufferin Terrace boardwalk; below it, Petit-Champlain is a lane of 17th-century houses that is genuinely old rather than reconstructed. Outside the walls, Saint-Roch and Saint-Jean-Baptiste are where the city eats and drinks without the tour groups.

Getting in: Jean Lesage International is about 10 miles west of the old town. Taxis charge a fixed fare of roughly C$41 to the centre; city buses run but take a while with luggage. Many US visitors fly into Montreal instead and take the train — VIA Rail runs the route in about three and a quarter hours and drops you at the foot of the old town.

French is much more dominant here than in Montreal, and outside the tourist core you will meet people who genuinely do not speak English. It is rarely a problem and always improved by trying a few words. The city is compact but built on a cliff, so pack shoes with grip — the stairs and cobbles are unforgiving, and lethal in winter ice.

Best time to visit

June to September for warm weather and open terraces. Late January and February for the Winter Carnival and the Ice Hotel, if you can handle real cold. September and early October bring fall colour and the year's best value.

Travel tips for Quebec City

Consider flying into Montreal and taking VIA Rail — often cheaper, and the train arrives right below the old town.
Stay inside or just outside the walls; the old town is where you want to be and it is small enough to walk.
Bring shoes with real grip. The cobbles and stairs are steep, and in winter they ice over.
Book months ahead for Winter Carnival and for the summer weekends — the old town has limited rooms.
Eat outside the walls in Saint-Roch for better food at half the tourist-core price.

How cold does it get in winter?

Cold. January highs sit around 21°F and nights well below that, with heavy snow. The city is built for it and the Winter Carnival is the reason many people come, but you need a proper coat, not a jacket.
