About Halifax
The city wraps around one of the world's largest natural harbours. The waterfront boardwalk runs for a couple of miles past breweries, the Maritime Museum and the ferry to Dartmouth; above it the streets climb to the star-shaped Citadel, which fires a gun at noon every day. The North End has the independent restaurants and breweries, and the whole downtown is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes.
Getting in: Halifax Stanfield is about 22 miles north of downtown — further out than most, so allow 35–40 minutes. A taxi runs a flat rate of roughly C$70; the Route 320 bus costs a few dollars and takes about an hour. A rental car is worth it here, because the reason to come is what lies outside the city.
Nova Scotia is the draw. Peggy's Cove and its lighthouse are 45 minutes southwest; Lunenburg, a UNESCO-listed fishing town of coloured wooden houses, is about an hour and a half. Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail are a four-hour drive but worth several days, especially in early October when the colour peaks and the crowds have gone.

Travel tips for Halifax
- The airport is 35–40 minutes out. Build that into your arrival plans; it catches people out.
- Rent a car. Halifax is walkable, but Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and Cape Breton are the reason to fly here.
- Lobster is seasonal by district and cheapest at a roadside pound rather than a waterfront restaurant.
- Hurricane season runs late summer into autumn and the Atlantic coast does occasionally take a hit. Travel protection is sensible for September trips.
- Cape Breton needs at least two nights to be worth the drive. Do not try it as a day trip.
