About Barcelona

The Gothic Quarter and El Born form the medieval core; the Eixample grid holds Gaudí's Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló; Gràcia is the village-like neighborhood above it; Barceloneta is the beach; and Montjuïc hill has museums and views. Girona and the Costa Brava are an hour away by train.

Getting in: El Prat airport is 8 miles from the center. The Aerobús runs to Plaça Catalunya in 35 minutes (€7.25); the R2 Nord train and Metro L9 are cheaper but slower. Taxis cost €35–€45 to the center. Vueling, Iberia and Level make it a hub for onward European flights.

US citizens need a passport valid three months beyond departure; no visa for 90 days, and check the EU's ETIAS status before travel. Cards work everywhere. Locals eat lunch at 2pm and dinner after 9pm; tapas bars fill the gap. Tipping is minimal — round up. Pickpocketing on the Metro and Las Ramblas is the main nuisance; keep phones zipped away.

Take the Aerobús — it's faster than the train for most central hotels.

Is Barcelona safe?

Violent crime is rare, but pickpocketing is common on the Metro, Las Ramblas and the beach. Keep phones and wallets in zipped pockets and never leave bags on café chairs.
