Southwest Airlines is the largest US low-fare carrier, flying an all-Boeing 737 fleet across the US, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. In 2025 Southwest replaced its Wanna Get Away fares with a Basic/Choice ladder, began charging for checked bags, and introduced assigned seating.

Southwest Airlines: common questions

Does Southwest Airlines charge for checked bags?

On most economy fares the first checked bag costs about $35 each way (more at the airport). Choice Preferred and Choice Extra fares include at least one bag. We show the bag allowance for every fare before you book.

Can I bring a carry-on on Southwest Airlines's cheapest fare?

Yes. Southwest Airlines's Basic fare includes a personal item and a full-size carry-on bag, but seats are assigned at check-in and the fare cannot be changed.

Can I change or cancel a Southwest Airlines ticket?

Every booking on Air1 Tickets can be cancelled free within 24 hours (for flights 7+ days out). After that, Basic fares cannot be changed, while Choice Preferred fares allow changes with no change fee (you pay any fare difference). Refundable fares return the full amount.

How do I check in for a Southwest Airlines flight?

Check in online or in the Southwest Airlines app from 24 hours before departure using the airline confirmation code on your Air1 Tickets e-ticket. Your Air1 reference is for managing the booking with us; the airline code (six characters) is what Southwest Airlines needs.

Fare rules and fees are set by Southwest Airlines and change; the details shown when you search are authoritative for your booking. Southwest Airlines is a trademark of its owner.
